Supporting 1.1 Million People Worldwide

The Challenge

As one of the UK’s most important health charities, Epilepsy Action is relied on by more than 1.1 million people across 221 countries every year. For many, the charity’s website isn’t just an information hub, but a lifeline. Parents searching for urgent advice, individuals facing a new diagnosis, and families seeking reassurance all depend on it being clear, accessible, and available.

With Scale, Comes Complexity

But with this scale comes complexity; Epilepsy Action needed to manage a complex, high-traffic digital presence while navigating strict Google Grant limits, evolving search algorithms, and the dual challenge of driving both fundraising and awareness through social campaigns.

Perhaps most critically, epilepsy as a condition had historically struggled for recognition in wider health conversations. Awareness was low, and the charity’s digital presence needed to do more than inform; it needed to shift perception and put epilepsy firmly on the public agenda.

The Results

This impact has also extended beyond performance metrics. Just this year (2025), Epilepsy Action entered the YouGov Most Popular Charities & Organisations report for the first time in its history. It was not only a milestone for the charity but the first time any epilepsy organisation had appeared in the rankings, Donations are already 6 per cent above target, and PR coverage has exceeded goals by 22 per cent, confirming that the charity’s digital awareness-building is cutting through like never before. Year-to-date, website visits have already surpassed 1.26 million, supported by steady growth across every digital channel.

Paid search activity has delivered over one million impressions and more than 24 million seconds of watch time, all within the strict constraints of Google Grant, while organic visibility has been maintained and strengthened across 221 countries, despite repeated search algorithm updates working in combination with social campaigns which have successfully combined fundraising with awareness.

"Working with Epilepsy Action has been one of those partnerships where strategy and purpose genuinely align. From the beginning, our focus was on building a digital foundation that could grow with the charity — and seeing their team achieve national recognition and record engagement is incredibly rewarding. This isn’t just about results; it’s about helping a vital organisation reach more people, more powerfully, than ever before."

The Solution

Black Lab became an extension of Epilepsy Action’s team, building an integrated approach across web, paid search, social and SEO.

Website delivery was central to the solution, with Black Lab delivering a major migration from Shopify to WooCommerce while introducing new tools such as FundraiseUp and chatbot functionality to improve supporter journeys. A full rebrand in 2025 aligned the site with new guidelines, creating a future-proofed platform that can handle global demand while making it easier to find help and donate.

Black Lab made every penny of Google Grant spend, within Paid Search, count. Campaigns were built to respond quickly to awareness events, maintain competitiveness against commercial advertisers and consistently deliver reach.

Social activity was designed to do two jobs at once; grow long-term awareness and generate immediate donations. Proactive brand campaigns, reactive content and remarketing combined to nurture supporters through the funnel without losing sight of the bigger mission.

Adaptability was key within SEO as Black Lab worked with Epilepsy Action’s team to create accessible, search-friendly content while optimising it for new AI-driven results. Monitoring and responding to algorithm updates ensured visibility was sustained across 221 countries, keeping vital information accessible worldwide.
