With Google’s phase-out of third party cookies and the imminent enforcement of Google Consent Mode V2 in March 2024, it’s time to ensure your business is ready to adapt. At Black Lab, we offer expert guidance on implementing Consent Mode V2 to safeguard user privacy, maintain advertising revenue, and ensure that your business complies with evolving regulations.
Google Tags are at the forefront of user consent management and are crucial for businesses processing data and managing user visits. By integrating a Consent Management Platform (CMP), businesses can protect user privacy while managing consent status across multiple platforms and domains. Consent Mode V2 explicitly allows users to reject cookies, whilst providing webmasters with access to machine learning and behavioural modelling to “fill the gaps” in their analytics and site data.
The core difference of Consent Mode V2 is that it is now mandated by Google in order to better align with new data privacy regulations (Digital Markets Act 2023). Failure to comply with the new requirements can result in the loss of access to your Google Ads account, or even monetary fines. Google Consent Mode V2 builds on the original Google Consent Mode by explicitly requiring users to consent, and the introduction of two additional tags that need to be sent to Google.
In most current setups, cookies, both first party cookies and third party cookies are (if accepted) stored on a user’s computer. Many browsers now automatically block third party cookies, however Google now requires webmasters to take charge of their data processing.
Google Consent Mode V2 works by allowing users to reject cookies altogether, and instead send cookieless pings to Google for Google to carry out behavioural modelling. No more local-storage on a client’s machine.
To get started with Google Consent Mode V2, you’ll have to choose from one of the consent management platforms that are compliant with consent framework guidelines and configure it to manage user consents effectively. For example, at Black Lab, we chose to use Complianz. For help with setting up your Google Consent Mode – contact our team today.

Configure Tag Manager to handle consent type descriptions and authentication functionality seamlessly.
For web tracking, Google Consent Mode V2 requires new tags:
It’s best practice to work closely with website developers to ensure tag configuration aligns with consent settings and user privacy preferences. At Black Lab, our Web Dev team can help to install Google Consent Mode V2 onto your website whether it’s built in Shopify or WordPress.
To enhance a user’s experience – we suggest implementing consent banners and consent settings in a transparent manner, allowing users to easily manage their preferences. We’ve noticed many websites fail to do this, instead forcing users to accept cookies; a practice that will be penalised under the new rules.
Failure to adhere to new Google Consent Mode rules can result in account bans, meaning you won’t have access to Google Ads or Google Analytics. Use Google Consent Mode V2 to ensure you can continue advertising to users.
Implementation of Google Consent Mode V2 helps solidify trust with your users; since you can respect user privacy by protecting IP addresses, browsing history, and user data while still being able to enable personalised advertising.
Our team of experts is dedicated to helping businesses navigate the complexities of consent management and ensure compliance with Google’s evolving policies.
